Guam - The candidates of this year’s Miss Universe Guam gamely explored the many fascinating sites featured in the Hagatna Heritage Walking Trail.

The 2.5 mile hike through historic Hagatna covered 17 significant sites from the pre-contact, Spanish, early American, World War II and the post war periods. While leading the candidates through the various sites, tour guide Tony Ramirez of the Department of Parks and Recreation vividly narrated the significance of each structure.

The candidates visited the Fort Santa Agueda, Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica, Plaza de Espana, Gov. Carlton F. Skinner Plaza, San Antonio Bridge, Hagatna US Naval Cemetery, the Chamorro Village, Japanese Fortification, and various government buildings and monuments.

Going through 3,000 years of our island’s history proved to be an enriching experience for this year’s MUG beauties. The expedition was arranged by the MUG pageant committee in the hope of deepening the candidates’ awareness of our rich culture and appreciation of our colorful history. According to Joyce Bamba, National Director of Miss Universe Guam, “This tour is just part of our overall effort this year to adequately prepare our candidates for the challenges and responsibilities of representing our island.” The pageant committee has lined up a series of activities that will provide the candidates with the training and exposure in various areas from history, culture, tourism, community service, and self development. “By boosting their knowledge and building their confidence, we are empowering these ladies to carry on the duties that come with the Miss Universe Guam crown,” Joyce says.

The exciting 2010 Miss Universe Guam pageant kicks off with the formal presentation of candidates to the media on June 21, 2010, 10:00 am in the Fiestan Tasi Ballroom, at the Fiesta Resort Guam. This year’s batch of 11 candidates will be undergoing rigorous screening during the preliminary judging. Finally, the grand pageant night will take place on June 30, 2010 at the Sand Castle.
