Dominican beauties compete during the "Presentation Show" held last week.
The winner will represent the caribbean nation in the Miss Universe pageant.

Reigning Miss Universe Leila Lopes arrived today in Santo Domingo to participate as special guest during the crowning of Miss Dominican Republic Universe to be held on Tuesday, April 17th.

In addition to her apperance on the beauty competition, Leila will also participate in charity events as well as a series of media interviews.

During her reign, which started last September, Leila has been in Singapore, Miami, Indonesia, Johannesburg, Gabon, Dusseldorf, Chicago, and her home country of Angola.

Carlina Duran Baldera was crowned Miss Dominican Republic Universe 2012

25-year old Carlina Duran Baldera was crowned Miss Dominican Republic Universe 2012 during the annual event held at the Jaragua Hotel in Santo Domingo on April 17th.

Carlina, who competed as Miss La Vega, stands 182 cm in height and will represent the Dominican Republic at the Miss Universe 2012 competition in December. She competed in the Tourism Queen International 2011 pageant.

She was also named “Sexiest Woman in the Caribbean” 2011 by Global Beauties.

The 1st runner-up was Miss Distrito Nacional, Dulcita Leggi, who will travel to Ecuador to Miss Continente Americano; and the 2nd runner-up was Miss Santiago, Carolyn Hawa, who will travel to Bolivia to the Reina Hispanoamericana competition. Peravia and San Jose de Ocoa completed the top 5.

Miss Universe Leila Lopes was guest of honor at the event, televised live on Antena Latina.

Dulcita Lieggi Francisco will be the new Miss Dominican Republic Universe 2012 after Carlina Duranwas dethroned today by the country’s organization after they found out that she was married.

The announcement to dethrone Carlina Duran was made by franchise holder Magali Febles, who organizes the Miss Dominican Republic Universe competition since 2004. Febles said that Duran will be replaced by the 1st runner-up, Dulcita Lieggi Francisco. “We had no choice but to take away her title”, she said. The coronation of Lieggi as the new Dominican representative in Miss Universe will take place on Wednesday.
